Kenya

Magical Kenya

More than 70 tribal groups occupy the land with English and Swahili being the official languages of Kenya, however many other major tribal languages are spoken in the area. Home to the ‘big 5’ Kenya has some of the most beautiful scenery in which to see its wildlife such as Maasai Mara National Reserve and Lake Nakuru National Park.

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s best known game reserve. There are no fences between the Maasai Mara and the bordering Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, allowing large numbers of animals to roam freely between the two parks. You will also be likely to spot the ‘Big 5’ here - buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion and leopard, the park also has very healthy populations of cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hippo, hyena, jackal, eland, crocodile and a wide variety of birds.

A two hour drive from Nairobi (Kenya’s capital) and situated on the Great Rift Valley floor is Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its abundance of birdlife including Flamingo as well as having both black and white Rhino in residence. Other wildlife found in the park are buffalo, lion, leopard, baboon and antelope to name a few.

The dry seasons in Kenya and in turn the main tourist season are January and February and then July to October. If looking to maybe catch a glimpse of the migration then travel August to October. Alternatively if you don’t mind the rain travel between March and June and October to December.

Tanzania

The soul of Africa

The largest country in East Africa including the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba. Tanzania contains some of Africa’s most well-known game parks, The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area are truly world renowned. Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro also resides in Tanzania. Like its neighbour Kenya the Swahili culture and language is used in Tanzania.

Serengeti National Park was created to preserve the path of the world’s largest migration circuit. A massive accumulation of 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 gazelles stretching their legs over 1,200 miles in an annual race to find enough water and green grass for their survival. As well as being the stomping ground of the great migration there are plenty of concentrations of wildlife, especially the big cats.

Often referred to as ‘Africa’s Eden’ and the ‘8th Natural Wonder of the World’, The Ngorongoro Crater is a definite world class attraction. Within the crater rim, large herds of zebra and wildebeest graze nearby while sleeping lions laze in the sun. At dawn, the endangered black rhino return to the thick cover of the crater forests after grazing n dew-laden grass in the morning mist. Only indigenous tribes such as the Maasai are allowed to live within this protected areas borders.

At 5895m, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak, rising above the East African plains. It is also the highest free standing mountain in the world and one of the highest peaks you can scale without technical expertise. Few other treks in the world offer rainforests with primates and game, alpine pastures, high moorlands of giant eerie plant life and snow fields at the summit.

Tanzania can be visited year round and the climate varies considerably depending on where you are. Generally the main rainy season lasts during March, April and May. This consists of an afternoon tropical downpour. The humidity in these months is high and temperatures are in the low 30’s. The second rainy season is in November and December and this is considered the ‘short’ rainy season. The dry season if from June to October.

Uganda

The pearl of Africa

One of the most beautiful and friendly countries in Africa. Home to Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where chimpanzees and mountain gorillas can be trekked for. The capital Kampala, is built on a series of hills on the northern edge of Lake Victoria, and the neighbouring city of Jinja built over the outlet from that lake. The scenery to the west is dominated by high ranges of mountains and is suitably spectacular.

Queen Elizabeth National Park provides magnificent views of the mountains that separate Uganda from central Africa. The park has over 500 species of bird and 100 species of mammals making it one of the most bio diverse national parks in the world. It is also leads to Kyambura Gorge where treks for chimpanzees take place.

Surrounded by undulating hills is Lake Bunyonyi, at 27 kilometres long and 7 kilometres wide and with a depth of nearly 900m in parts its Africa’s second deepest lake. Close by is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is home to many of the world’s remaining 700 mountain gorillas. Gorillas usually live in groups between 12 and 20 led by the ‘alpha male’, known as the ‘silverback’.

Late December to late February is generally known as the dry season in Uganda and good for gorilla although hot and humid. The next best time to see the gorillas is June – September, although gorilla trekking is a year round activity the difficulty level will increase when it is wet.
